test shots

OK, so here is a test of ideas...

With a grey silk sash to tie in the grey hem pleats:

and here is a velvet NF era overskirt I already have, to give an idea of the skirt with a black overskirt:

But ya know, there's no reason I can't also have a grey overskirt. That way I can put it with this as well as any black underskirt. Just a thought :)

Wow, it looks really cool with the black over skirt.

Black always seems to work to pull any of my outfits together ~ yay!

I think it looks good with the gray sash and the black overskirt but I think I'd like it with the gray overskirt too....But I can see why you thought it was a little too much by itself.

Thanks! I agree and definitely love the sash. It needs it.

I'm staking out the "grey (gray) overskirt" position: one of the effects in your inspiration piece that I think likely happens in real life more than in your test pics is that the black embellished fabric is not a "solid" but rather a translucent panel of individual threads of fringe, sequins and space, and the grey below it shows through/will show through when you move. Add to that the currently invisible (grey with black trim?) jacket/bodice, and the whole outfit will not be as monolithic as your tiny "Tim Gunn" voice feared. You are "making it work!"

In addition, of course you can swap out overskirt elements and sashes and jewels (hmmmm....a beaded crystal watch chain....grey pearls....hmmm...).

For the test pics--I like the grey sash. The diagonal movement across the horizontal fringe is lovely, and plays well off the knife-pleat trim. What about some grey knots of ribbon or bows? It's fun to see the whole outfit built up bit by bit.

I can tell you really can see the project!

Tell me of your "grey knots of ribbon and bows" idea! I wanted to put a "medallion" at the top and bottom of the pleated sash, but hadn't considered anything else. What's your thought?

I like the shape of the overskirt, but I think it would look better in gray. The sash is really pretty too! :D

Love the gray sash.

The gray sash is perfect! The overskirt would be great in black or gray or both. ;)

I think the gray sash with the black pannier overskirt is perfect. That fringe material is an amazing find and you "make it work" so well. I'm thinking that a gray overskirt might cause a gray overdose and you'll lose the pop the gray sash has...unless it was trimmed in black....maybe.

Bleh....I said "gray" too much.

I agree on all points :)

The sash is lovely and the black fringe doesn't look as harsh from the front, I like that you can see the grey underneath. Either overskirt color will look amazing.

Ooh! I really like it now! That drape evens it out. Beautiful!

I LOVE the sash!! The black overskirt is nice, but what if you did it in grey, and added a band of black pleating to it as trim. I don't know if you remember my dress from your picnic this summer, but on my overskirt i had a band that was about 4" wide. It was pleated and sat about 4" in from the edge of the overskirt.

Great minds think alike. If you read back, you'll see that was my original plan :D Yay!

YAY!! I love it.. I can't wait to see it. I'm such a sucker for pleats.

Oooh pretty!

Scrap my previous comment about transfering to a black skirt - the grey skirt with black overskirt is fab!!
