Question about sleeves

Some patterns call for you to line sleeves with stiff netting...such as 1890's and 1830's. I don't bind the seam allowance or use a lining, so the netting rubs most uncomfortably into my arm. Other than binding it with bias tape, is there any other trick? Probably not, I figured I'd ask anyway!

Thanks!

By the way, the zig zag "Colleen Atwood" bodice is complete except for back closure and button decoration on the front. I think I did it!! Can't wait to show you when it's done!

Woohoo! Can't wait to see the bodice!

I still have to do something with my sleeves with netting. But I have to figure out what won't be scratchy.

Yeah, I learned a tough lesson wearing my 1890's bodice. Ouch!

Binding it with bias tape is perfect and definitely well worth it for the added comfort.

Thanks for the advice, Sweetie!

Beauty is pain, baby!

And mesh is the most uncomfortable thing, *especially* to sit on, omg...

Netting is scratchy!

[identity profile] waterhousesmuse.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 03:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you thought about putting a lining layer of soft sheer closest to your arm, so as to shield you from the scratchy stuff?

[identity profile] madamemodiste.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, no, I hadn't thought of that. Great idea!

[identity profile] waterhousesmuse.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
No problem. Make sure you give a little "test" to make sure the netting won't poke through. I'd probably choose a fabric with a soft hand but not too sheer, otherwise it won't be substantial enough to protect you.

[identity profile] waterhousesmuse.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Er, I mean "not too loosely woven." There are many sheer fabrics with a substantial enough weight to be up to this task.

I usually flatline the sleeves with organza, its not as scratchy but still stiff enough to help hold them out.

[identity profile] madamemodiste.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Terrific idea!! Next time, though, as the sleeves are already done. Why didn't I ask this yesterday?? LOL!

[identity profile] demode.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I would add a fitted lining to the sleeve - it'll help keep your puff the right length up & down your arm, plus protect you from the netting.

Thank you for the great advice!

Could you overlock the edge rather than binding it if you don't have the time for binding?

[identity profile] madamemodiste.livejournal.com 2008-08-27 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Great minds think alike -I tried that, but the netting still scratched me. So far I have cut the netting out of the seam allowance on the sleeve I hadn't finished. Hopefully, that will help! After reading advice, I'm going to do a bias binding. It's not that I don't have time, but I wanted to learn other ways to handle the problem. Turns out there are a few! Whoo hoo!

Can you give any tips to those of us that will be making this pattern soon? Like problems you had, and what you would suggest? I've already made a note of [livejournal.com profile] bauhausfraus suggestion of using organdy to line the sleeves. Mine will be smocked/gathered on the upper portion of the sleeves however.

Sure, I'll try! So far I had difficulty with the hem, but I think you read about that. Also, I know hook and eye was the correct sort of closure, but I'm so terrible at putting them in. I think if I had to do it over again, I'd use buttons back there!

[identity profile] chloeandrudy.livejournal.com 2008-09-01 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Were you using hooks & eyes, or hook & eye tape? I used that last time, and LOVED it. I don't know if I'm putting it in right because no one has ever shown me so I do a lot of fiddly stuff to the ends.

[identity profile] madamekat.livejournal.com 2008-09-01 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I have hook and eye tape, but I can't seem to figure out how to use it without setting them too far back from the edge of the CB, creating a flap as a result. I hope that made sense. I'm hand sewing hooks and bars.

[identity profile] chloeandrudy.livejournal.com 2008-09-01 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Makes sense. I have same problem. I looked at one extant gown and it had two flaps: one behind that the eyes are on, and one that overlaped it on top to cover a gaposis. I didn't get a chance to find out if the back section was a separate piece attached tho. That seems likely tho.
I can't do the individual too well. They never line up properly. and no matter what I do, there's gaposis.

hello!
I followed you over from dress diaries (hope you don't mind)
I did the net and the binding thing, but mine ended up being really bulky in the end and so I am taking them out and working on a 'sleeve support' thingy at the moment....
(but in my usual way I did the dress before the period corset - and I have only just finished the corset)
I have had only one attempt at the sleeve support so far, and got sidetracked - but I can let you know if/when I do eventually get it sorted, if you like....

Hello and welcome!

Good to know about the binding making the armhole bulky. That would be bad! Can't wait to see your finished gown :D
