1874 black day gown

This is a gown that's been on my "to do" list for forever, but I never had enough black taffeta sitting around at one time to do it. The other day I got 16 yards of a good crisp medium weight black taffeta for $1/yd at Jomar. I knew it was time!!

I am using the TV 208 view A, and it has an option for a pocket in the side seam. I decided it would be awesome to have a pocket, so since the TV pocket instructions were scanty, I looked it up. Here was a great set of instructions for a visual learner such as myself. Dude, I did it!! I made a pocket! I feel like some grade school kid who just learned how to tell time or something lol!

In other news, I seem to have temporarily abandoned the black velvet coat bodice because I dread putting button holes through all that velvet O_O

OMG, I just realized I never shared the "finished" photos of the ballgown I recently made

Oh, that fashion plate is so pretty! Can't wait to see what you do!

Thanks, I've been looking forward to doing this dress since I got "Full Color Victorian Fashions 1870-1893" nearly 5 years ago!

Oh my gosh, that is one of my favorite fashion plates, too!! I can't wait to see the amazing concoction of frills that you make :)
And you look stunning, as usual, in your newly finished ballgown!

Glad you like the plate! I know you can appreciate a good black gown, too! I still remember that amazing Edwardian you made (and sold) as well as the early bustle you wore to Costume College a few years ago.

Thanks!!

That looks familiar :D. I never finished my version of this fashionplate. The only thing left to do is the overskirt, but I just had enough of the pleating. Hmmmm, I might just try to finish it this year (who knows...).

Your ballgown is gorgeous, as always. Really love the fabric! It makes me want to make another fantail skirt.

Yeah, ever since I bought "Full Color Victorian Fashions 1870-1893" nearly 5 years ago, it's been on my wish list. I think every fellow Victorian goth gasps with delight upon seeing that fashion plate for the first time!!

That's a whole lot of ruffles, I can't wait to see it!
P.S. The new ball gown is amazing

[identity profile] madamemodiste.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I might have to have a "ruffle party" to get through it! It'll be a nice excuse to get together again anyway :)

Thank you!

[identity profile] blackcat452.livejournal.com 2010-02-27 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
I would love a "ruffle party", anything I can do to help!

What about bound buttonholes in a contrasting fabric on the velvet?

[identity profile] madamemodiste.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want the button area to compete with the trim I have planned (sort of want it invisible-ish), but if I weren't doing trim so close to the buttons, that would have been awesome :D

Wow! That is a stunning dress, I can't wait to see it made up! The ballgown looks great too!

[identity profile] madamemodiste.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, it's such a cool plate. I've loved it for years, but could never afford the many many many yards of taffeta I'd need. Jomar to the rescue!

I have just died of the marvelousness of your dress. Congrats on another beautiful job! Can't wait to see the taffeta one.

[identity profile] madamemodiste.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, wow, thank you so much!

Amazing! And so you :)

Lovely fashion plate as well.

And aren't pockets the best? I love having them in my dresses! I make them huge too. I could fit a small cat in one of them :)

I can't wait to see the final result with all those pleats!

I feel your cat will shoot me with its laser eye if I make "grabby hands" at my monitor.

Pretty, pretty!

I'm constantly amazed at your talent for sewing. You have no fear and take on difficult projects, which always look truly amazing on you

[identity profile] robinia-acacia.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
Ooh that dress looks great and the fashionplate absolutly scrumptious!
I can understand about the learning thing, we are all so busy with complicated historical outfits that basic sewing is often skipped and unknown.

[identity profile] vanityfairy.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
So cute that the advanced seamstress you are with all your gorgeous dresses have to look up pockets. =)

Oh, and you look fab, of course. And will look even more so in that scrumptious fashion plate dress!

Oh yes you're right ! Since I saw this gown , I fell in love with it, but money, time ... Ouch it's hard! Good luck for your project !

I love the pattern on the fabric, and the skirt is so graceful looking. You do bustling so well! *envy*

[identity profile] medvssa.livejournal.com 2010-02-26 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so glad you fell for the natural form, gorgeous, and I can't wait to see the tafetta dress!

If you make that spendifically beauteous dress I'm going to swoon.
