Wishing

I wish TV or someone would publish a pattern for the pretty turn of the century pouter pigeon gowns. I have the Janet Arnold, of course, but I need directions. Ageless Patterns and Patterns of Time don't have anything like this, either.

Funny you should say this today. This morning we're having our annual planning meeting to decide which patterns to produce next. And I LOVE that look. =)

Oh wow! What timing! I LOVE this look, too, and no one does it. I have all these gorgeous pouter pigeon evening gown bodice images in my inspiration folder, and I have no idea how to make one. You'd have the market all to yourself!

[identity profile] kass-rants.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
And I likes me a market all to myself. =)

Say, if you wanted to share some of your inspiration images, I'm open to suggestions. Like I said, we're planning for next year right now and you never know what will catch my eye.

Ooooo! A collaborator in my evil plan! Or should we say "accomplice"? ;)

I like "evil instigator"!!

[identity profile] kass-rants.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh! Images received. You are just too awesome!

[identity profile] madamekat.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I want this to happen so badly, so I'm happy to do my part. I have a few more images, but figured that was probably enough to start!

[identity profile] kass-rants.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. It's certainly enough to begin my ruminations. When I start pinning down options and alternatives, I'll let you know.

I have a book called
http://www.amazon.com/Century-Fashion-Patterns-Tailoring-Techniques/dp/0486412415/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243431513&sr=1-9

The patterns are all from this era, maybe you find something to modifey?
or
http://www.amazon.com/Edwardian-Modiste-Authentic-Instructions-Techniques/dp/0963651714/ref=wl_it_dp?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2ZSHQ1OAMGC3V&colid=30OJIOYY6BT6K

Or look here:
http://www.longago.com/edwardianwomen.html

You may have to mix and match, unfortunley alot of patterns aren't as elobarete as the fashions in those days, but alot is trimmings too ofcourse.

Yeah, those books look fun!

I just don't know how to do the double layer foundation with the poufy outer layer. Problem with those books is you have to scale them up, and they usually have either super minimal directions or none at all. Since I've never done this era before, I need full step-by-step directions.

Have you made anything from the book you have? How did it turn out?

[identity profile] robinia-acacia.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I haven't I just got it a month ago but making patterns out of books scare me too.
It takes some time, depending on which book your using ,you have diffrent scaling techniques.
YWU does have a step-by-step instruction how to scale up a pattern and make it your size at the SPP articles.

This books does not have alot tailoring directions and dressmaking as the titel sugests, it explains scaling the patterns, measuring yourself.
Each pattern has drafting instructions and they explain about seam allowances and such, but nothing more.

So pretty! I was just watching Sherlock Holmes "The second stain", which has a really nice frock in it, thinking this is such a lovely style (when done right). The though of having to make/wear an "S" curve corset has always kept me away though! :P

[identity profile] madamekat.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The "s" curve corset...ah, yes, but my plan is to be a bad girl and skip it. I know it won't be quite the same, but I'm ok with that. *watches historical accuracy points flying out the window*

intresting you say that. I have an outfit from this era that I made for a work thing and I just didn't have time so I wore it with a long victorian non s-curve style corset. But looking at pictures it's remarkable how much I look like I'm about to fall over. The combination of the pigeon blouse and a small bustle pad really gives a good illustion. http://www.flickr.com/photos/14941369@N07/3456919897/in/set-72157617063601420/
I'm the one in the middle

[identity profile] my-lady-f.livejournal.com 2009-05-28 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was wondering about the corset...
I'd just about have to have one to unlearn all those years of tucking in the hips!

[identity profile] madamekat.livejournal.com 2009-05-28 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)

And so did they!!

[identity profile] dragoneyes19.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
If you remember what I wore to the philly picnic, it's a pigeon breasted blouse from past patterns which has great instructions. And I used an ageless patterns skirt, minimal instructions but it was super easy to put together. I think I did in less than one 8 hour shift at work. I'd be really tempted to say those are two peice dresses because you have to cut alot of fullness into the blouse that you gather into the front and I don't think you could make it all one peice, at least not easily. They have great instructions if you want me to fish them out you're welcome to borrow for the instructions if that helps.

Thanks, sweetie! I'm really looking to reproduce the evening gown bodice, which is a two layer contraption of confusion. I have lots of images that show the foundation bodice and attached poufed overlayer, and without a pattern that tells me just what to do, I am lost. But I appreciate the suggestion! Your blouse and skirt were beautiful!

[identity profile] dragoneyes19.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
ah well if you need help I'm happy to help, sometimes that college degree in making costumes comes in helpful :-) We can always have a stitch'n'bitch to iron out the details for ya.

[identity profile] madamekat.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love that!! Basically, I'm trying to make an off the shoulder evening bodice with some oyster satin overlaid with black net lace.

The skirt is about half way done and now I'm pondering the bodice.

Ooo just lovely! I'll dig out arnold to brush up since it's been a year since I was in that era. That will look very stunning when it's finished!

[identity profile] aesthete.livejournal.com 2009-05-27 05:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hear, Hear! I'd love to see something like that also! :)

[identity profile] bauhausfrau.livejournal.com 2009-05-31 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo, I love the black and white one! Let me know if you do find any patterns for something like that.
