DVD- The House of Elliot

I put the BBC series The House of Elliot on my queue, and I watched my first installment last night. WOW!! I'm really in love with this series! As it's about two sisters who start a fashion house in the 1920's, I thought it was an appropriate topic for my sewing journal.

Has anyone else seen it and want to share how fun this series is?

I adore that series! I bought a 20's-esque dress chiefly because it reminded me of that series.

IMHO, the later seasons weren't so good, but other viewers disagreed, so here's hoping you'll be one of them!

Yay!

And it seems some of my other readers felt the same way as you, and the later seasons weren't as good. At least I'm prepared!

I enjoyed ALL of the three seasons. Later you didn't get the thrill of seeing new gowns being made, or a fashion show, but it still was a fun series. So enjoy it!

Oh, ok, I've got it now. Later seasons were just different, but still good. YAY!

Always a good thing!

Here (http://cgi.ebay.com/3C1-New-Blue-Butterfly-Vintage-Dress-Embroidered-XL-1X_W0QQitemZ150161827017QQihZ005QQcategoryZ63880QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) is the dress I bought because it reminded me of their first "blue" collection.

WOW! That's really beautiful!

I haven't gotten to the part where they have a collection yet. They've just moved into the flat above the photo studio and are painting it.

:-) Well, I think when you get to that bit, you'll see what I mean about this dress! I always think of it as my "House of Elliot" dress.

I love that series. I saw it when it was first broadcast.

Good! Glad there are others that also liked it :D

I saw The House of Elliot on PBS several years ago and really enjoyed the first season. If I remember correctly the ratings in the following seasons didn't measure up and the series was canceled before the story reached the full conclusion. I'm not sure PBS showed the final season. If they did I definitely missed it.

Louise Lombard, who played Evangeline Elliott, is now on CSI as a detective. It took me the longest time to figure out where I had seen her before because her hair is long and blonde. A shame because I thought she looked great with her brunette bob.

Thank you for reminding me about this series. I'm going to go and see if I can find a set locally. I'd love to see the costumes again. Plus I had a thing for Aden Gillett at the time. (Saw him in Mary Poppins in London almost exactly 2 years ago now!)

Oh, I hope they at least tied the loose ends! There are several series that just ended, leaving me wondering whatever happened!

I haven't seen it, but I think I'll have to put that on my list of DVDs to get!

[identity profile] madamemodiste.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely!!

I have three seasons of it, and I LOVE IT!! It was a lot of fun seeing them design and make those fashionable dresses, and then wearing the avantgarde ones themselves to set the style.
I took some photos of some costumes and hats off the tv screen while on pause too. I so would want to make and wear clothes of that era.

It's rare when I see a show that pulls me in so completely. I love ALL the characters! When I got to the end of my installment, I shouted, "NOOOOOOO!" at the TV because I wanted it to go on and on and on forever.

A few years ago the V&A had an exhibition of the costumes from the series. Made me smile to see that the fake 20's gowns were more popular than the real ones just around the corner of the gallery...

[identity profile] madamekat.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 02:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! That's too funny!!

[identity profile] pvcdiva.livejournal.com 2008-01-23 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
They were repeating this on one of the digital chamnnels not so long ago and I fell in love with it all over again. The younger sister is now a regular in CSI doing a very convincing American accent...

...if you liked this, so if you can track down Mapp & Lucia. It's also set in the 20s, about the social life in an English seaside town that's thrown into turmoil when a new resident arrives. It has Geraldine McEwan and Prunella Scales as the two leads who try to outdo each other. MArvellously bitchy and the clothes are just heaven. Sadly shot on video and apparently the video transfer to DVD is horrible, but it's highly entertaining for the social sniping done excessively well by two terrific actresses...

Thanks for the tip! I'll look for that series next :D

Oh, that DVD sounds lovely! Too bad that where I live I can't get things like that! I added you as a friend, I hope you don't mind, your posts are great!

Happy to have you, and I'll add you back shortly! This is my public journal, so as long as people are kind to me and each other, everyone is welcome. Of course, I'm hoping for feedback on my projects occasionally, too :D
