18th C. stays in better light
Sort of like Oz: Do not look behind the curtain...I mean, too closely at the binding along the bottom edge. But I think I did OK for a very first corset!!

[EDIT] Ah ha! I've been given a tip over at an 18th C LJ site and was told my lacing is wrong. I vaguely knew that, but don't have a clue as to how to do the other kind no matter how I stare at it. Then the other question: I have to unlace this thing by myself at 2am...can I do that with the proper 18th C. lacing style?

I like that shoulder-posture supporting style as well

And yeah, this thing makes you stand right up!

Was this the Antoinette pattern or something else? Either way you did a glorious job!

This was the Butterick B4254 View A 18th Century stays pattern unaltered. I cut it out one size smaller than the pattern says is my size on advice from others who have made this one. Perfect!!

Can't wait to get my craft room all finished so I can start sewing again. :-)

As always,

This should help with spiral lacing. It actually makes it easier to get the stays on and off by ones self since there's no busk to aid with that.

Hrm...so my grommet placing is wrong for spiral lacing. Opps-lol! Think I can do it anyway?

Yeah, totally. If I had thought about it, I would have cut it higher because now I can't wear it alone. Unless I AM alone!! But in a way it's good because I can actually wear it under my 18th C. sacque back gown and it won't peek out.

If I was you, I'd use narrower binding, about half that wide. It makes the corners way way easier. Of course, I normally do mine by hand, which takes longer, but is also a lot easier to make look nice/perfect.
Those paniers are cool too.

Actually - I think I might have used the same pattern as you too....

You keep doing the whole red and black thing as if its your way to tell me to take it ;-)

Hm, I think I have to order yet another pattern, no matter there is already one for stays in my box.
But - maybe I missed it: Which pattern did you use for the paniers?
Thank you!

Probably not...

I had 2 women tell me they swear they can do it themselves because they have their husbands put a slipknot at the top. I might give it a try.

[By the way, would you recommend Burda patterns? I was looking at the 7880 one but I can't seem to find reviews online, maybe you know something about it :)]

Other than her claim that the fabric yardage was incorrect, she seemed to have no problems with this pattern. You'd want to put a petticoat on underneath the underskirt, and can make it from the same underskirt pattern and adding a 12" ruffle to the bottom. Otherwise, it looks droopy like on the package photo. Good luck!!
