Sort of like Oz: Do not look behind the curtain...I mean, too closely at the binding along the bottom edge. But I think I did OK for a very first corset!!

[EDIT] Ah ha! I've been given a tip over at an 18th C LJ site and was told my lacing is wrong. I vaguely knew that, but don't have a clue as to how to do the other kind no matter how I stare at it. Then the other question: I have to unlace this thing by myself at 2am...can I do that with the proper 18th C. lacing style?

I like that shoulder-posture supporting style as well

Oh, it looks lovely!

Was this the Antoinette pattern or something else? Either way you did a glorious job!

Thank you!!

This was the Butterick B4254 View A 18th Century stays pattern unaltered. I cut it out one size smaller than the pattern says is my size on advice from others who have made this one. Perfect!!

That came out beautiful, especially for a first try! I've made one corset so far and it's definitely not easy!!

Can't wait to get my craft room all finished so I can start sewing again. :-)

That's gorgeous! :-)

This should help with spiral lacing. It actually makes it easier to get the stays on and off by ones self since there's no busk to aid with that.

Ooooh, thank you!

Hrm...so my grommet placing is wrong for spiral lacing. Opps-lol! Think I can do it anyway?

I bet you could!

You could do ladder lacing with your placement though, which would be slightly more historical ;)

*grin* Thank you!
Yeah, totally. If I had thought about it, I would have cut it higher because now I can't wear it alone. Unless I AM alone!! But in a way it's good because I can actually wear it under my 18th C. sacque back gown and it won't peek out.

Awesome!! I need to make some more, I love them, so pretty.
If I was you, I'd use narrower binding, about half that wide. It makes the corners way way easier. Of course, I normally do mine by hand, which takes longer, but is also a lot easier to make look nice/perfect.
Those paniers are cool too.

Ooooh! You know, the pattern called for 1/4" binding, but I made 1/2" instead thinking it would be better. Duh. Thank you for helping to solve that!

From: [identity profile] standgale.livejournal.com
I think I did that the first time too - surely BIGGER must be BETTER! :D
Actually - I think I might have used the same pattern as you too....

Date: 2008-05-28 03:22 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] madamekat.livejournal.com
I figured the 1/4" was too skimpy and I'd surely mess it up during application. Little did I realize! Doh!

Hm, I think I have to order yet another pattern, no matter there is already one for stays in my box.
But - maybe I missed it: Which pattern did you use for the paniers?

Thank you!

I need to edit my post. I didn't make the panniers. I commissioned them a few years ago from a girl on Ebay, but she's gone now.

I had 2 women tell me they swear they can do it themselves because they have their husbands put a slipknot at the top. I might give it a try.

Very pretty! I think 18th c stays are just way to pretty to just wear underneath everything else - I hope you'll wear this as an outer garment too - it deserves to be shown off!

Date: 2008-05-28 12:06 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] madamekat.livejournal.com
Yes, it was made as a clubbing garment. I wish it came up higher in the front, though. It's too revealing to be worn without some modesty panel in front.

Some pretty lace on a tubetop? They're great to wear under corsets, and the lace could spill over the corset so you'd think it was attached to that instead of a seperate garment underneath.

I'm 36, so I saw the original trilogy in the theatre. My favorite IS the Last Crusade. You've got me pegged! And my husband and I saw the new one the day it opened. I'm also a fan of the first National Treasure movie with Nicholas Cage.

Very prety! I like the bows at the shoulders. And you can get out of stays like these by yourself. You can even lace yourself in if you use a long enough lace. I lace the top part of my stays, slip 'em over my head, tighten the laced part, and thread the lace through the rest of the eyelets and tighten. When I take my stays off, I unlace about 2/3 of the way up then just loosen the top lacing so I can slip the stays off over my head. (If your girls are particularly healthy, this doesn't work as well -- the girls behave better and the stays end up more comfortable if you lace from the bottom up if you need to reign a lot in. :))

[By the way, would you recommend Burda patterns? I was looking at the 7880 one but I can't seem to find reviews online, maybe you know something about it :)]

I haven't cut and used this one, but I have it in my pattern stash. There was a woman on one of my Victorian sewing boards that made it...

Other than her claim that the fabric yardage was incorrect, she seemed to have no problems with this pattern. You'd want to put a petticoat on underneath the underskirt, and can make it from the same underskirt pattern and adding a 12" ruffle to the bottom. Otherwise, it looks droopy like on the package photo. Good luck!!

I have made this outfit - twice. The jacket is pretty easy but not for the beginner. Unlike other pattern companies Burda doesn't use those points (or whatever they are called) along the seams so you must pretty close attention to the pictures. Still it isn't a hard jacket to put together especially if you use cotton material. It is definitely made for light weight material. The skirts are a very easy. The pleating is especially easy to do and the back is has a nice pleated look. I will post pictures of my outfits in my own LJ soon. I am wearing one of the jackets this weekend to an event so I should be able to post a picture then. I will post it public if you are interested.

Hope this helps you.
