Undergarments for Chemise a la Reine?

I need to make a chemise and a petticoat for the chemise a la reine. I have a corset already. I have a pattern for the chemise, but what kind of petticoat do I need to make? Advice on how full it should be? Do I wear a bum roll?

Should they be of linen or cotton? Light weight, I assume.

I wear the following under my chemise:

shift (short sleeved)
corset
bum-pad
fluffy woollen petticoat (née blanket)
and (since last week) a muslin petticoat.

And of course stockings & shoes

I have a linen one, but I'm no expert! I love the painting in your icon - do you have a bigger one?

Cool, thank you!

Oooh, a bum pad? What's it look like? I can make that!

Any advice on the petticoat? Fullness, shape?

photo emailed to you!

Linen sounds good :D

(I love watching Katherine's icon changing pictures at a different rate in the posts!)

I haven't made one of these, but there was some discussion of undergarments here: http://community.livejournal.com/chemisedresses/2189.html

I wear a shift (chemise), 2 lightweight petticoats and a bum roll or false rump. I used the Wingeo pattern (the only one in the line I like! :>) for that. http://www.jennylafleur.com/precis/2004_01.htm

The petticoats are just 2-3 panels of fabric pleated onto a waistband. Linen is probably more accurate but cotton is easier on the budget so that is what I have right now. Both Katherine and I have short tutorials on 18th century petticoats you might find helpful.

Look here - I wore the petticoat last winter as "modern" skirt for dance training - the fluffy white thing:

The bumpad looks roughly like the moon, approx 3 days after being full. constructed after trial & error principe, but if you'd like, I could take pictures tonight.

Thanks, Lady!! You rock!!

And I'm SOOO glad you liked the Wingeo pattern. I'm suffering from sticker shock on the RH pattern...$40 with shipping. I know it's top quality, but this is just for little ole me.

Oh wait. You mean you used the Wingeo for the underthings, not the gown. Darn it!

I was going to say they want $40 for a bum roll pattern! But no, I used the Waugh diagram for the dress and the Wingeo for the false rump.

I wanted to make sure you knew about it, anyway!

Makes sense to tell me about it since they seem to cover all the things I'm asking about. Thank you!!!

Look what I found, a commhttp://community.livejournal.com/chemisedresses/unity on chemise dresses:

LOL, we were just talking about that comm, in the comments above, probably just as you were posting. Great minds!

It makes it easier to find all this info in one community, than trying to remember it or find it later when I decide to make mine. Just not a priority right now but definitely in the workplan.

And why the heck when I paste the http in, it puts it in the middle of the sentence I was typing before it? Now that link isn't working.

o/t, but I have to ask --

Where did you get that icon? I want to see the full picture!

I made it this morning after seeing it here:

I love that it's a big size so you can see detail well.

Thanks! I might have known it came from Kallisti, her site is such a fabulous resource. The detail on that is amazing! Even down to the hem of her skirts.
