More progress on the 18th century gown

Today I constructed the over skirt. When I say constructed, ...yeah...it's more like an architectural moment than sewing!! Anyway, It went pretty well. I put my panniers on my mannequin and took piccies of the gown so far.

So tomorrow I'll construct and apply the sleeves and hopefully make the underskirt. It looks pretty lifeless with out a petticoat underneath. I also usually use a small bustle pillow in back to fill in the area between the hip buckets in the back. Oh yeah, I also have to put on the hooks and eyes and hem the overgown.

It's beautiful!! :-) Can't wait to see the rest! (you're making me want to break out with the gown construction myself)

Thanks!!

Yeah, it's so wonderful when friends are doing stuff to get your creative juices flowing :D Your capes were WONDERFUL, by the way. That velvet is such a bitch to work with, and you get serious kudos!

Yay, thank you!

I can't wait to see yours!!

I can't wait to wear it with other ladies in similar garb.

That look great - I'm sure you'll enjoy wearing it!

Thank you!

I keep thinking about your other comment regarding the fitted back. I can't imagine a MORE complicated way to make this, and it blows my mind! I bow down to you that you've made so many of these.

I learned by force (working in a costume shop...) although you should be proud of yourself because most people run and hide from these gowns.

Out of curiosity, how many yards did you end up using total?

[identity profile] madamekat.livejournal.com 2007-10-27 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, crap! I had it all written down at the beginning, and now I don't have it anymore, and I forget entirely. It was something like 9 yards. However, I haven't done any trim yet, and I will in the end.

That is just *so* amazing!! I can't imagine how you have time for that *and* school!!!

[identity profile] madamekat.livejournal.com 2007-10-27 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Awww, thank you, Lady!! I wish I had more time for this. Halloween really snuck up on me this year. I had planned on starting this much earlier, but school really took over my entire life. I had to turn down so many wonderful invitations in order to study and/or write papers. I knew I had a few days between the 24th and Halloween to start making this. I'm so glad that I had previously cut out the 19 pattern pieces and most of the fabric. That takes sooo long!!

I've always thought sewing should be given more clout as a form of architecture ~ and one that has to both look good and *fit* a person as well!

Good work :)

It's looking awesome!
I'll look forward to seeing how it turns out with the petticoat. ^_^

It's so majestic!
Good going!
