madamemodiste: (I love bustles)

As you know, I bought 10 yards of black satin taffeta and 6 yards of black cotton velveteen.

I LOVE the skirt on this dress, and wondered the best way to go about the treatment for the underskirt(s) - never mind the cording/lacing bit at the side (thought it's cool, I'm not doing it. I think I'll go for three small sashes with tassels on the ends)

How would I go about doing that? To save on fabric, I'm thinking of doing the underskirt in black cotton (since no one will see it), then adding the two layers of pleats in the satin taffeta about half way down, and then attaching the velvet part at the waistband. How would YOU do it?

Just playing around with ideas as I can't actually start this project until after Xmas.

Regarding that serger, my girlfriend is MIA. Actually, she's on vacation visiting family for 2 weeks, and I never got to talk to her beforehand. Sorry.

Oh, that's ok!! I did get plenty of responses between here and the Belle Alley. I still can't decide!! - isn't that sad? LOL!

I think that's a great idea, and totally period. You'll look just fabulous in this!

So that's right? Really? I can't believe it! All my reading and studying of Victorian gowns is finally paying off! Now if I could just figure out how to do bodices...

This sounds like the perfect method of construction.

That's an awesome gown. I think some of the cording on the edges (like the scalloped one and the bottom edge of the bodice) might actually be piping though. Not sure if that makes it easier or even more annoying. ;)
