Whew!! 20 rows of cording later, and we have an 1830's-40's corded petticoat!

Well, I mean, it isn't starched yet, so I guess it's almost done. Couldn't wait to share, though!

Sorry the lighting isn't better. We're in the middle of a thunderstorm! It was fun taking pictures on our deck in that, let me tell you.

Thank you! I drew many lines so that it wouldn't be wobbly!

It looks great! I did 20 rows of cording on my petticoat and found it was a nice number to have.

Is this done with the single layer of material method? or the double layer method?

It looks very nice - it looks just like it's supposed to!

Thank you! Single layer.

You whipped that up pretty neatly and quickly! I'm still puttering with my at about 12 cords....must take inspiration to finish it!

Thanks! Inspiration and lots of time and costume movies!

The petticoat looks great, but I have to admit what immediately caught my eye was your new trellis! I'm so glad you felt free to personalize that area to make it what you wanted :) Does that mean the cats can go out onto the patio more freely now? It really looks terrific.

Oh, and your pretty card & fabric payment arrived in the mail today ~ I'm so glad the material was a good choice and that you like it :)

Thank you! Yes, I have been sprucing up the deck a bit. The cats can no longer sneak out the sides, so yes, it's easier to watch them out there.

That looks awesome!! I will be picking your brain on it when I get to it! I need one of those! :-)

Thank you! It was easy but tedious. You should have seen my face when I read that steel hoops weren't worn in the 1830's. When I realized I had to make a corded petti, I almost scrapped the project. I'm so glad I didn't!! I really love it.

LOL!

I just used a modern petticoat for the Poe event because I didn't have time to make one, but I really should - I can see needing it for a couple of gowns! BTW, if you want to go to the Poe event next year, you're more than welcome to crash at my house. :-)

Oh, that's very nice!! I have a pattern in mind for that event, too, but I'm not sure, with school, if I can attend. Keep your fingers crossed!

And you are welcome to come to Philadelphia and crash at our place. We have a full sized air mattress. We also have 4 cats in case that matters!

Hopefully you'll be able to make it! :-)

And thanks! :-) I have one kitty. :-)

That's is just lovely. And what a great tip about starting the cording in different places to prevent collapsing or denting that you mentioned earlier. I never would have thought of it.

Yeah, that was a great tip. I'm so glad the lady over on the Belle Alley was kind enough to warn me about it. I certainly didn't think of it.

It looks awesome! Any plans for additional petticoats besides this one? (flounced one, maybe?)

Yeah, I have plans for a tucked petticoat that will go over the corded one.

Oh my! !WOW! That is so amazing!

I know I don't leave many replies to your posts, however, I want you to know that I gobble up every post you make- from wip to finished.
It's fascinating to watch/witness your skills increase.
And I'm so envious of how prolific you are, not to mention how dedicated you are to completing each piece you start.

I think it looks beautiful! But I do wonder, do those cords have a function? *Blush*

From: [identity profile] madamemodiste.livejournal.com
Yeah, that's why I was forced to make it. They didn't have hooped petti's in the 1830's. The petti's were stiffened by means of the cords (and starch) and helped hold out the gown. They wore several to get the right shape. I'll have 2. Here's a regular cotton petti and then the corded petti side by side so you can see. It's not a huge difference, but the gowns weren't huge then.

OK, it's been saturated in starch and is now hanging to dry! I can't wait to see the effect!

Thank you!
