Whew!! Cutting out 3 layers of large pattern pieces takes seemingly forever! I suppose if I had a cutting mat and rotary cutters I could do two layers at once, but I can never seem to keep them smooth and neat if I try to cut two different fabrics at once. Anyway, they are cut out. Now to pin the flannel to the wool and baste them together.

I really love my rotary cutter! Put some heavy things on the layers, like a bottle of wine, etc. and it really works ;)

I always want to use a rotary cutter for things. :) At home usually I just use it for very heavy/stiff fabrics.

At my workplace they absolutely don't allow us to cut more than one layer of fabric at once (for accuracy's sake), although I've heard that at some other costume shops they do use rotary cutters. It really does screw up the grain sometimes though (I've found.. .though maybe I just don't know the correct way to do it).

That's weird....I think rotary cutters increase the accuracy of cutting, which is why I use them for cutting out corsetry patterns. They certainly disturb the fabric less than pinning.

The key is pattern weights in my opinion.

The key to smooth rotary cutting is pattern weights. They're $10 for a pack of 4 at Joanns but can easily be gotten for 1/2 price. You can also use paperweights in a pinch.
