madamemodiste: (fabric shopping)

When Beth and I met up the other day, she had a gift for me! Many yards of a striped cream and silver silk and many yards of a solid silver silk!! She bought them and decided she wasn't going to use it, and instead of returning it (perhaps she couldn't?), she gifted them to me! I'm so lucky!

I know I usually see 19th century in fabrics, but I really see 18th century here. What should I make? If it helps you to visualize, the stripes are 1" each.

Oh, that's exactly the one I was thinking about but couldn't figure out where I had it saved!
It could even be a later polonaise and bustle.

That's the one I wanted to suggest too! I love that gown and something like it is on my whish-list. These fabrics are perfect for this gown! Although I love the pictures posted by Bauhausfrau as well. What a wonderful gift from Beth! You definitely are a lucky girl!

Btw, I have this pattern in my stash for this gown: http://www.wingeo.com/patterns/200series/patrn207.jpg

She GAVE it to you! They're so pretty, I'm dying a little inside...
I see a polonaise with the underskirt in solid and overskirt/bodice in stripes. Maybe a zone-front.
Ah, prettiness...

I think you should join the floofy polonaise bandwagon and do something really over the top and fabulous like these:

The fabric looks quite light - would it be stiff enough to create the folds for a dress like this, or would it sort of just hang sadly?

It depends on the hand of the fabric. If it's crisp but light it should work. If it's a drapey fabric it would need to be interlined with something stiffer.

Is it a silk taffeta Kat?

This is the one I thought of right away - it's all about the stripes...

Considering the dusty/subdued tones, those would look amazing paired up with a powdered wig!

Here's a lovely one

The stripes seem smaller, though.
